How to start writing your marketing plan

Writer's picture: MonicaMonica

A marketing plan can sound so daunting and intimidating! But it's not :) Marketing is obviously an essential part of your startup's success, so I wanted to take today to discuss the first steps you can take towards building your marketing plan.

The below are essentials that many startup founders tend to skip, forget, or just gloss over - but please don't!

1. Outline your personas

It is essential that you understand exactly who your prospects are. What do they like, what challenges do they struggle with, where do they look for solutions, where do they spend their free time? Only when you know all this will you be able to target them correctly, on the channels where they already are.

2. List your channels

Once you know who the personas are and where they hang out, you can start listing the channels you'll use in your marketing. Is your audience on Facebook? Do they prefer email communication? Are you targeting B2B marketers, and you can see there are many LinkedIn groups for B2B marketers? That's where your content should be.

3. Set your targets

Without a clear target and set of goals, you'll never know how much time and money you need to invest, and whether you are performing well! So think back to your business plan and set goals and targets that match what you have laid out there. How many users/subscribers do you want in a month? In 6 months? You can then take that number and break it down by your channels and personas, to get clear milestones!

And remember - anyone rarely gets it right from the first time! You'll need to test different things, try various channels, use different tones and images, until you find the perfect combination that works for your audience.

As always, I am happy to answer any other questions or elaborate on the above! Have you started on your marketing planning yet?
